Smirnoff Double Black Wins The Packaging Innovation Award

Smirnoff Double Black recently received a Gold Medal at the Institute of Packaging’s Gold Pack Awards. The striking glass bottle boasts organic, unique ink mediums and effects that capture Smirnoff’s boldest cut yet, Smirnoff Double Black Vodka.

Leading premium alcohol beverage company, brandhouse, challenged the experts at Glass Decorations to push the boundaries to develop a bottle that would break the norm and match the Smirnoff Double Black Vodka’s bold liquid credentials.

The journey included sourcing ink mediums both locally and abroad, achieving an ideal blend between coating paint, decorating inks and foiling as a finishing touch. With this, the blue/black coated bottle, decorated in a newly developed glitter blue, matt metallic silver and a high gloss silver foil finish was created.

The coating effect, with a slightly transparent finish, gives the illusion of the bottle being black. Depending on the angle of the light reflecting through the bottle, it is transformed into a deep ocean or night sky blue. Similarly, the glitter blue ink used appears black, but light exposes the striking glitter effect.

Brand elements are highlighted by understated matte, metallic silver and white, and the pack is rounded off with a tactile high-gloss silver foil frame emphasising key areas. Only completely organic-based mediums were used to create the bottle which, combined with a glass container, has a proven sustainable beverage footprint.

‘We feel so honoured to be recognised for the best packaging in our category over the past year. We put a lot of effort into creating this spectacular product to feature in our premium line-up,’ added Kyle Lesch, Brand Manager of Smirnoff Vodka at brandhouse.
