Screen Showcasing Partnership-Driven Innovations For Secure Exam Booklet Production And More

SCREEN and IBIS Integrated Bindery Systems are unveiling their latest innovations in digital printing and finishing for end-to-end production workflows that drive production efficiency. This collaboration highlights advancements in workflow security, traceability, and finishing, combining SCREEN’s expertise in digital inkjet technology with IBIS’ pioneering finishing solutions to support businesses wanting to meet the rigorous demands of examination booklet, pharmaceutical labels, and other commercial print production.

The two companies are showcasing their latest partnership-driven innovations at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2025, taking place until 27 February in Lucerne. The new IBIS Smart Label-binder at the SCREEN booth is demonstrating live production of label booklets from 45gsm printed rolls. This next step in this ongoing partnership between SCREEN and IBIS brings a new level of productivity to the fast-growing market of Extended Content Labels (ECLs) for the Pharmaceutical and Agro-Chemical industries.

‘The Smart Label-binder’s innovative glue-binding technology offers a sustainable and reliable alternative to wire stitching and is essential for most ECL production, perfectly complementing the capabilities of SCREEN’s digital inkjet presses,’ said John Cracknell, Managing Director at IBIS Integrated Bindery Systems.

‘While 95% of ECL production is still handled by traditional lithographic printing, digital printing workflows are rapidly becoming a driving factor for this market,’ continued Cracknell. ‘The Smart Label-binder’s ability to handle very lightweight stocks together with its patented cold-glue binding technology, integrity controls and optional laser-cut ‘tabbing’ makes it a world-leading finishing solution for ECL production.’

This new solution synergises well with Truepress JET digital inkjet printing, where shorter timelines and enhanced precision are required as traditional lithographic workflows for this application often struggle with lengthy setup times, numerous separate manual processes and inconsistent quality.

Meanwhile, SCREEN ink formulation innovations enables faster, high-quality printing onto thin papers common for this application. Truepress SC+ Inks allow flawless inkjet printing on 40gsm papers or direct inkjet printing unto offset coated substrates all in a single package. Meanwhile, advanced printing technology deployed in presses like the New Truepress JET 520NX AD, such as reliable and fast web handling for delicate papers without breakages and NIR drying to minimise static build-up, further enhance printing on thin papers common for this application.

IBIS Integrated Bindery Systems has traditionally been at the forefront of examination booklet applications, where ensuring workflow security and 100% booklet integrity is paramount. In this high-stakes sector, every page must have a unique identifier to guarantee accuracy, maintain the correct page order, and ensure regulatory compliance.

SCREEN’s EQUIOS workflow software is uniquely suited to meet these stringent demands with advanced data management and traceability ensuring 100% secure data handling, safely managing sensitive student information. Each print job includes a detailed digital record of every page for unparalleled transparency, critical for regulatory compliance and quality assurance.

Together, SCREEN and IBIS technologies have been thoroughly integrated to bring an efficient and reliable end-to-end production package to this application, setting a new benchmark for security and precision for examination booklets.
