Keith Solomon and Mel Ellis have started a company which offers reliable pre-owned prepress equipment, giving people a viable alternative to the high prices of new computer-to-plate and prepress systems.
The printing industry has changed and continues to change and with it there is a progression in technology. However, in certain areas, the advancement in technology comes down to a small increase in productivity for a drastic increase in price. Computer-to-plate and the prepress hardware sector has hardly changed in the past ten years and the result is that most of the more than 400 installed computer-to-plate systems installed in South Africa and the neighbouring countries have not been replaced in the same time period. Add to this the fact that the Rand to Dollar exchange rate has worsened and the cost of replacement equipment has become exorbitant.
Over the years of servicing the local market, Solomon and Ellis have assembled a wealth of contacts. Included in this network of suppliers are companies who can offer a range of factory-checked and refurbished systems. All systems leave the factory meeting manufacturer specifications. Computer-to-plate and even imagesetting systems from Kodak, ECRM, Screen, Heidelberg and Agfa are available. In addition, they can source and supply fully refurbished and reconditioned thermal laser heads and other spare parts for a range of systems. Within their network, Keith and Mel have included qualified and factory-trained engineers who can handle the installation, maintenance and servicing of all systems purchased.
‘Many companies need to upgrade but cannot afford to. The systems we are offering have all been checked and refurbished in the original factories by the manufacturers technicians. In some cases they have even been upgraded to the latest specifications. Through our knowledge and expertise in the prepress arena we can advise customers on which would be the best solution for their specific needs,’ said Solomon.
