HP Inc. recently announced a new wide tabletop print engine for OEMs to design on-demand specialty packaging solutions. The HP OEM Fixed Imager 1000 by HP Specialty Printing Systems (SPS) enables convenient in-plant or print service provider printing on a wide range of applications including gift and shopping bags, personalised gift boxes, shipping packaging, cartons and envelopes.

The announcement was made at the recent FachPack event. The highly versatile HP F1-1000 print engine introduces a 29.72cm (11.7 inch) wide print swath, offering a large image area for colour printing on variable lengths of media.

‘This wider print engine can deliver more elaborate on-demand colour packaging and commercial printing applications for short-run, personalised direct to package printing. Brand owners can differentiate their packaging, shopping bags and envelopes to make their products stand out with colour and personal messages,’ said Annette Friskopp, general manager, HP Specialty Printing Systems, HP Inc. ‘HP opens extensive opportunities for OEM partners with a range of inkjet printing capabilities to meet fast-paced market needs.’

HP also presented a wide portfolio of labels and packaging solutions from HP SPS, HP Indigo and HP PageWide Industrial. The SPS HP F1-1000 print engine can be easily integrated into OEM printing systems and configured to specific applications. Built on HP Thermal Inkjet Technology with thousands of nozzles for high-quality printing at high speeds, the HP FI-1000 also offers speeds up to 45.7cm (18 inches) per second depending on desired print quality.

Also in the HP SPS area at the HP stand, the new wide-swath HP 22mm print head printed live. It prints stitch-free product identification and marking applications for secondary packaging, including pharmaceutical labels and cartons, secondary box label replacement as well as variable data printing. In addition, HP SPS partner UBS Code presented their latest product identification printing solution based on HP Thermal Inkjet Technology.

HP SPS also presented GMP compliant (1) HP 2580 ink, compatible with single and bulk print head solutions, for food and pharma coding and marking on non-porous surfaces. HP Indigo presented a range of sustainable packaging solutions, including compostable samples, and fully recyclable pouches printed on the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press. Samples from HP Indigo customers included Schur Flexibles Uni Packaging and Rootree (formerly SwissPack).

HP experts also presented the sustainability advantages of producing flexible packaging on the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press. The HP solutions offer lower environmental impact compared with analogue technologies, including reduced waste and energy consumption, use of recycled and recyclable materials, and a consumables takeback programme.

For the first time in Europe, the HP stand featured commercially produced high-performance flexible packaging printed on the HP Indigo 20000 using the revolutionary Pack Ready Coating technology. The HP corrugated area featured packaging digitally printed on the HP PageWide T1100S Digital Press and HP PageWide C500 Press using HP’s water-based food-safe inks.
