Avery Dennison Announces New Compostable Labels

Both of the company’s new label products are OK Compost certified and approved by the FSC®. Since they are suitable for industrial composting, they are a natural match for compostable food packaging, coffee cups, ice cream cartons, supermarket bags and more.

After launching a portfolio of compostable labels in 2020, the company experienced significant demand for an expanded collection from converters and brands interested in eco-friendly packaging solutions. The new products include:

MC PRIMECOAT FSC SX6030-BG40BR white paper with a semi-gloss appearance.

THERM 200HD PLUS NP FSC SX6030-BG40WH FSC thermal printable paper with a top and backside protective coating.

Certified for sustainability and approved for food contact

A white paper with a semi-gloss appearance, MC Primecoat can be used for general purpose multicolour printing while Thermal 200HD, which is suitable for variable information printing, offers enhanced resistance to damage resulting from moisture, oil, UV light exposure and rubbing. Each item features the SX6030 adhesive and is approved for direct contact with dry, moist and fatty foods.

According to Luuk Zonneveld, product manager, Avery Dennison, the new labels can help companies meet sustainability targets, comply with new policies and appeal to eco-minded consumers.

‘Many brands are adopting recycling and sustainable sourcing goals driven by legislation focused on banning single-use plastics,’ he said. ‘Succeeding requires workable solutions, including compostable packaging and labels like these, which break down in the soil and give something back to the Earth.’

‘The latest additions to our compostable labels portfolio will make it easier for brands to shrink their carbon footprints without compromising quality. I’m excited to say that with MC Primecoat, we can offer compostable solutions for general purpose print jobs. For tough variable information print conditions, Thermal 200HD is an excellent option. Even when exposed to rubbing, grease and liquids, it stays intact. Both products are also OK Compost certified and have undergone significant testing to ensure compostability.’
