Minuteman Press Edenvale added a RISO GD 9630 inkjet printer, purchased from Altron Document Solutions (ADS), to its business.
Regardless of the number and types of images or volume of text, full-colour images remain true to the original with the GD 9630. For text-intensive documents, words remain crisp and easy to read. Super high-speed printing and single-pass full-colour printing of up to 160 letter size long-edge feed colour pages per minute, with fast-drying oil-based pigment ink, is possible through a unique print engine configured with static inline inkjet heads arranged in parallel. Transactional prints, transpromotional materials, invoices and other routine business documents are also produced fast.
‘Primarily we are using it for NCR books that we used to print on a litho machine,’ said Minuteman Press Edenvale owner, Bruce Richards, who added that the mechanics of the system alone has allowed the company to get jobs out much quicker.
According to Richards, the cost of keeping litho machines operating became completely out of control, in terms of materials, labour, and the fact that volumes have fallen from large numbers to very few. Eventually the litho department at the company was shut down, ‘The only option was to go with the RISO machine,’ he continued.
He praised the simplicity of the process which, once the design work has been approved, involves the push of a button, before everything gets sent to the finishing department, and added that the turnaround time for their NCR books have now gone from 7-10 days to 3-4 at the most, often even quicker.
With the RISO printer, Minuteman Press Edenvale has recaptured the NCR book market. The company aims to move into the colour printing space later, such as with school books, although it is a once-a-year type of business. According to Richards, school books in colour are cheaper to print on the RISO printer. Before, colour school book printing jobs were going to other companies with RISO machines, but now Minuteman Press Edenvale can do all of this work in-house.
The overall service was described as smooth and flawless, ‘John de Beer from ADS has been in contact with us regularly because we have one of their toner digital machines. The installation went smoothly after a very small hiccup but that was fixed almost straight away. Overall I am very happy with the service from Altron and RISO.’
Following the installation, a team from RISO Africa came in for an installation review and did training with some of the company’s staff. ‘It was probably one of the better investments I’ve made since I opened this business 20 years ago. This came at a time when I really needed it,’ concluded Richards.
